چکیده

We use linked employer-employee data to investigate the job satisfaction effect of union membership in Britain. We depart from previous studies by developing a model that simultaneously controls for the determinants of individual membership status and for the selection of employees into occupations according to union coverage. We find that a negative association between membership and satisfaction typically found in previous studies is confined to non-covered employees. We interpret this as a union voice effect. In covered occupations the negative association between membership and satisfaction disappears having accounted for selection effects, suggesting that less satisfied individuals are more likely to be union members, but only when the occupation is covered by collective bargaining. Our results are also consistent with the existence of queues for union covered jobs. JEL classification: J28, J51

Job Satisfaction , Wages , and Unions

Why So Unhappy? The Effects of Unionisation on Job Satisfaction

We use linked employer-employee data to investigate the job satisfaction effect of unionisation in Britain. We depart from previous studies by developing a model that simultaneously controls for the endogeneity of union membership and union recognition. We show that a negative association between membership and satisfaction only emerges where there is a union recognised for bargaining, and that...

Unhappy at home: should you blame your partner’s job? An Empirical Study of happiness transmission

Do happy or unhappy individuals contaminate the other members of their household? The idea of within-household contagion effects has very seldom been explored in the literature, probably because the available household data are in general not informative enough with respect to the interdependence between the members of households. This paper incorporates some theoretical ideas from epidemiologi...

Employed but still unhappy ? On the relevance of the social work norm

In the modern welfare state, people who cannot make a living usually receive financial assistance from public funds. Accordingly, the so-called social work norm against living off other people is violated, which may be the reason why the unemployed are so unhappy. If so, however, labour market concepts based on the notion of promoting low-paid jobs that are subsidised if necessary with addition...
